Open Meetings Act

The Open Meetings Compliance Board

The Open Meetings Compliance Board helps resolve disputes that arise about open meetings.

The Board has no authority to punish offenders. Its opinions are advisory only. Opinions from the board may not even be used in court actions by someone seeking remedy to an unlawfully closed meeting.

The Board also helps educate public bodies about their responsibilities under the Open Meetings Act, and when necessary recommends amendments to the Act to the General Assembly.

People can also contact the Board prior to a closed meeting if they believe it is being closed illegally, and the Board or its counsel would work with the public body to try and bring it into compliance prior to the meeting.
